The spring turkey season in Michigan is by permits only and opens in mid April and ends the last day of May. My permit was for May 5th until the end of the month, I could hunt state or private land in the upper half of the state and only private in the lower half of the state. I was able to hunt a friends place down in the lower part of the state. The first time I got out was a beautiful Thursday morning. I didn't make it out in to the woods until after the sun was up but, there was still some Toms gobbling off in the distance. I chose to hunt the edge of the woods along a newly planted corn field and my friend took to the woods. I sat just in side of the woods and made calls about every half hour or so. A few yelps just to let them know a lonely hen was around. I sat in that spot until eleven or so and only saw one bird. It was a single hen walking the field’s edge and she walked less than ten yards from me then turned and walked in to the woods again so close as if she was sayin...
This past Thursday Oct.23, I had the opportunity to head to the woods and try my luck at hunting some fall turkey and squirrel. The weather for the day was to be blue sky and lots of sunshine, in the high fifties, a great day to be in the woods. I meet up with my friend who chose to hunt the hard woods so he drove further in and I parked at the gate, I was to hunt the ridge. I parked and quickly got my kit together and picked up my fowler and headed in. After crossing what is called the sand bridge I stopped and took in the woods in its full fall color and thanked god for the day and then primed my flintlock. We were to try for turkeys until lunch time then squirrel in the late afternoon. I wanted to hunt the two- track that follows the ridge because at different times that I have been out there I have run in to the birds also walking it. As I walked slowly along scanning the trail ahead I didn’t go far when a big fox squirrel run up a tree and began to chew me out for disruptin...
In the above two photos you can see what I carry when in the field. I was turkey hunting when I took these photos. Starting with, my bed roll. It's made up with a wool blanket covered with a small piece of oil cloth and carried with a leather tump-line. When sitting and watching for game I use the bed roll as a seat. With in climate weather I can use the blanket as a matchcoat and sit on the oil cloth. I also carry a light ax and a small canteen. Here are the items that I carry in my shot bag. First my shot bag is 6" wide by 7" deep with a small inside pocket. Attached to the bag strap is a vent pick & brush. The powder measure is attached to the horn. In the bag I carry a wood tompin, a cloth bag with some tow for wadding and cleaning. Also cleaning wires, foraged bore scraper and tow worm. In the small leather pouch are some extra flints, a very small striker and old musket flint and a few wooden toothpicks to plug the touch hole with. Also seen is a small wooden t...
